The movie starts in a laboratory where government officials are studying the effects that marijuana have on a subject. They test to see if they should classify it as illegal. Obviously stoned, the subject begins to curse at his superiors and as a result, the government deems weed illegal and “gets rid of” the subject.

Present day, a 25 year-old process serving stoner, Dale Denton visits his equally stoned drug dealer, Saul Silver to purchase marijuana. He offers a very rare strain called Pineapple Express. They both smoke a joint before Dale leaves his apartment, then smokes more, and ends up in front of the house of the next person he is supposed to serve, Ted Jones whom Saul mentioned was a big time drug lord.

In his car smoking his newly purchased Pineapple Express outside the house of the next person he is supposed to serve, Dale witnesses a crooked police officer and a drug lord, Ted, commit a murder. He flees the scene but unfortunately tosses his roach out the car window leaving it to be discovered by the officer and Ted. Ted and the officer agree that he saw the murder and are able to identify the roach he threw out as the rare Pineapple Express that only Ted supplies. Dale rushes back to Saul’s in a panic to ask about Ted and they conclude that he could be traced back to Saul since he is the only dealer selling it. Dale and Saul leave the apartment. Determined to catch the witness of the murder he hires two men in order find and dispose of Dale and Saul and so begins the chase.
