Growing Mistakes For The Cannabis Crop

There are some common mistakes that growers make, especially when they have little or no experience and being educated in the proper way to handle the marijuana crop can ensure a quality harvest.

  • Germinating Seeds: the one mistake that some inexperienced growers make is to handle the seeds when they are germinating, or when planting them. The proper way to handle these seeds is to wear gloves; this will ensure that anything that is on the hands will not be transferred to the cannabis seed. At this time the seeds can be damaged by toxins and the root that is sprouting from the seed is especially vulnerable to germs and toxins.

  • Unknown Seeds: one of the common mistakes that growers make is to use seeds that they do not know about, they do not know the genetics of the seed, they do not know the type of crop it produces and are often disappointed. Using seeds that are acquired from anywhere except a seed bank is risking having spindly plants, a crop that is mostly male, or a crop that has hermaphrodites.
  • Watering: The largest mistake that some growers will make with their marijuana crop is to over water the plants; this means there is a risk of killing the crop. The indoor grower should wait to water the plants when the top few inches of soil is dry, when watering more often than that it is extremely possible to over water the plants.

  • Fertilizing: Another common problem with growers is over fertilizing plants, this is not something that should be done every time the plants are watered. The first time the pot plants should be fertilized is when they have at least two spiked leaves, and the grower should start with approximately 25 percent of the mixing directions rather than a full dosage. If the plants are over fertilized, the leaves will begin to curl or burn, when this happens the grower will need to run a lot of pure water through the soil and this is something that can be done about once a month for the plants health. It is also important to use organic fertilizer on the marijuana plants, because using chemical fertilizer means that it will be absorbed in the plants that will be smoked after it has been dried and harvested.
  • Starting Seedlings: When seedlings are started for planting outdoors it is important that they are not started to early. This might sound like a good idea to the grower, but it really can end with a crop that does not grow as large or have as large of a yield when harvested. The risk of starting the seedlings to early can confuse the growing process,  because the hours of light are not as long earlier in the outdoor planting season as what the ganja plant needs to produce THC and the plants can become tall without many buds.

  • Air: The one mistake that is often made by the indoor grower is not providing enough fresh air, the marijuana plants health depends on the fresh air for several reasons, like being able to expel toxins through the leaves and for it to evaporate, this cannot occur when there is a lack of fresh air. They also need this fresh air to strengthen their stems, if the stems are not strengthened then the plants will need to be tied or there is a risk of the plant becoming top heavy and falling over.

  • Early Harvest: This is a common mistake with inexperienced growers, that see the buds, see the resin filled sacks and think that harvesting a little early won’t hurt. Really it will not hurt anyone but the grower, the marijuana plant adds approximately 25 percent of its weight during the last two weeks of growing and the resin turns from a milky color to clear, meaning it has also matured. It is better for the grower to leave the plants finish their maturing prior to deciding to harvest the crop.

  • Telling: Growers are always proud of a good crop, one of the common mistakes they make is to tell friends about the crop and how well it is doing. This is a mistake on several levels; the first is that when harvest time does come, friends will be waiting as impatiently as the grower for the final product. Another reason of course is that this is an illegal crop and even friends have big mouths sometimes and it can lead to trouble for the grower.
